Salerno or Amalfi: where to stay without a car
Compare Salerno and Amalfi as a car-free base. Weigh hotel savings against return ferries, evening plans, pier access and total trip cost.

Which option fits your trip?
Choose Amalfi if spending evenings on the coast and avoiding repeated return trips matters most. Consider Salerno if you find a suitable room and are happy to make day trips. Compare accommodation plus every return journey for your whole group; a lower room price alone does not establish which base is cheaper. Check operating dates and your fallback transport before booking.

Stay on the coast or use a gateway base?
A coastal base
You want evenings near the places you came to see and fewer return journeys.
Before booking: Map the final stretch to the room: stairs, luggage access and distance from the pier can matter more than a sea view.
Salerno with day trips
You are willing to travel out and back and want to compare accommodation away from the coastal towns.
Before booking: Add return transport for every traveller on every outing. Check the last connection before committing to an evening plan.
Several overnight bases
Your trip is long enough that moving once gives you more time in a different area.
Before booking: Allow for checkout, luggage storage, transfer and check-in. A move can consume the hours you hoped to save.
Plan the connection before booking the room
Travelmar lists ferry connections between Salerno and towns on the Amalfi Coast. Use its date-specific timetable to check both directions. For an airport arrival, plan the airport-to-pier leg separately and allow a buffer for bags and delays. A scheduled ferry is not a guarantee of operation in all weather.
Make the comparison fit your trip
Choose one base and leave room for unhurried days. Before booking, check how you will get from your arrival airport to the accommodation and how you will reach other places along the coast.
A sea view does not tell you how easy a property is to reach. Ask about steps, steep streets and luggage access. If you plan to use ferries or buses, check the operator’s schedule for your actual travel dates instead of assuming a summer timetable applies year-round.
Compare a central room with a cheaper stay farther away by adding the transport you would need each day. A rental car is worth considering only after checking parking, access and the trips you actually want to make.
Questions before booking
Is Salerno a cheaper base than Amalfi after ferry costs?
Use the difference between real accommodation quotes, then subtract the extra transport required by the Salerno option. Example only, not current prices: saving €40 per room per night for four nights saves €160. If the additional transport for the whole group totals €120, the remaining saving is €40. Add any extra luggage or transfer costs and decide whether the time spent travelling is worth that saving.
What should you check before a Salerno–Amalfi ferry day trip?
Confirm the exact departure pier, both sailing times and the fare for each traveller directly with the operator. Map the walk from your accommodation and check the last suitable return before planning dinner in Amalfi. Allow time to board and keep a land-transport backup for cancellations. Do not assume a summer service operates on your travel date or that different operators use the same pier.
COMPARE THE WHOLE TRIP
Which trip really costs less?
Enter totals for your entire travel group and the whole stay, in the same currency. Include mandatory charges once. Leave a field blank only if that cost does not apply. These are your estimates, not live quotes; nothing is saved or sent.
Ready to check availability?
Search with your actual dates, then confirm the full price and cancellation terms at the provider. Bokinger does not sell bookings or verify live availability on this guide.
